What is expected of an extra/background actor?

Modified on Mon, 29 Jun at 10:42 AM

Background actors above all must be professional. As exciting as it is to participate in the making of a film/tv show, everyone involved is there to work.

The ideal background actor is someone who can remain flexible, patient, communicative and professional at all times.

Professionalism looks like the following to casting directors:

  • Communicating with casting in a timely manner if you are booked to work.
  • Thoroughly reading all emails/texts from casting so you’re prepared for a full day of filming.
  • Showing up on time to your check in location with the requested documentation for start paperwork.
  • Dressing appropriately for the weather/day and bringing additional outfit options following the wardrobe notes in your booking/call info email.
  • Staying attentive on set and following any instructions given to you by the assistant directors + background production assistant assigned to supervise you.
  • Never leaving holding or set without notifying the background production assistant supervising you.
  • Returning all borrowed props and wardrobe as neatly as you received them once you're wrapped.
  • Never taking photos or sharing behind the scenes content without explicit consent from production.
