What does “checking your availability” mean?

Modified on Sat, 4 Jul at 11:11 AM

Production schedules are constantly changing, which means Casting Directors often have to check availability well before they know the final filming schedule.

When a Casting Director asks if you are available for a specific date or date range, they are not offering or guaranteeing you work. They are simply confirming whether you could work that date without any time restrictions if selected.

Being "available" means you are free for the entire day. You should not have appointments, work commitments, travel plans, or other obligations that could prevent you from reporting to set whenever production needs you.

Because production schedules are finalized at the last minute, Casting Directors often don't receive call times until the night before filming—and those call times can continue to change throughout the evening and even into the early morning.

Filming may begin:

  • Early in the morning
  • Midday or afternoon
  • Late at night
  • Overnight

For that reason, when you respond that you are available, you must be able to work the entire date, regardless of what time your call may ultimately be.

Updating your availability helps our team know when it's appropriate to contact you while keeping you eligible for future filming opportunities as schedules evolve.
